Basic defensive balance with 1 defender
STEP 1

Player with the ball from the sideline passes to a player without the ball, who shoots and then runs down to defend the basket.

STEP 2

Player grabbing the rebound starts the fast break with the player on the sideline.

STEP 3

The player who runs down to the basket becomes the defender, hence the switch of player 3 for defender 3; it is not a new player entering the court.

STEP 4

The defender protects the basket no matter what. An outside shot can be allowed since it is not their job; their function is to protect the basket.

STEP 5

Players are positioned at key points on the court, seeking offensive and defensive balance.

Drill

Basic defensive balance with 1 defender

The objective of this drill is to learn and internalize defensive balance to protect only the basket. Later, other aspects of defensive balance can be practiced. Clarification: in the diagram, attacker 3 and defender 3 are the same person. It just indicates that they go from being a shooter at midcourt to being a defender after shooting and running back for balance.
