Technical Details
Not all close outs are the same, but there are key technical points to teach them correctly.
- Defensive position and stance. Being well-placed and in good stance saves time and increases efficiency.
- Communication. The defender must signal when going to the ball to coordinate with teammates.
- Ball anticipation habit. Reacting before the ball arrives allows proactive defense.
- Movement technique. First phase: max speed running. Second phase: short steps to close space without unnecessary contact.
- Hand usage. Raise one hand to contest shots/passes, and prepare the other to defend dribbles or low passes.
