STEP 1
The drill begins with JCB going around the cone, and his defender must go around it as well.
STEP 2
JCB must attack the rim until the help defense stops him. Help always comes from the weak side, in this case the last defender. The defensive rotation should be as follows:
  1. Def 4 (last player) is the first help.
  2. Def 1 drops to close the back pass behind Def 4.
  3. Def 2, who was beaten, closes the outside pass to 1 (if 1 receives, he defends him, same as Def 1 does with 4).
  4. The defender of 3 makes an interior flash to recover his mark (“help, I was here”).
STEP 3 Shooting guard alters position to create defensive mismatches and penetration options. Point guard places themselves strategically to generate passing angles and anticipate defensive moves. 4 moves strategically to provide new passing lanes and open space. Small forward adjusts position to facilitate ball movement and anticipate the defense.
STEP 4
If the ball reaches the corner, the defender must not allow penetration through the middle; if beaten, it should be along the baseline. The defense must stay aware of rotations, according to their position relative to the ball: help or passing lane.
STEP 5
JCB drives along the baseline, drawing help from the weak side as at the beginning.
  1. Defender 4 provides help on the penetration.
  2. Defender 3 drops to cover 4’s back.
  3. Defender 2 moves into the paint to block the outside pass and defend JSB3.
  4. Defender 1, the beaten player, prevents the outside pass and covers JSB1.
STEP 6 The initial setup is organized to create synergy between movements, screens, and passes for the opening play.
